2 Weeks (and a few hours) to go...

At this time everyone participating in the 3D Printer Village should have gotten their Acceptance and Participation Agreement emails.   If you haven't already accepted the participation agreement, please do so now!

The Maker Faire team is now in the process of printing our 'Meet the Makers' signs, people can choose to post them in the Village if they want.   A sample one is here if you want to see it.     For anyone who hasn't been following along with the emails, we're now up to a 40' x 40' tent, and have put a lot of thought into the layout of the space to facilitate crowd movement and to make sure there are no 'bad' spots.  We should have comfortable room for 16 printers, and an 18' table area for the assembly section.

We've got some great Supporters donating everything from banners and filament to complete printer kits, hardware, and electronics.   Many of these vendors will stop by the Village on show days, I'll try and introduce people around when we see them.

I have also created a Visitors page and I hope to be able to give out business cards at the event with a QR code for this page.   If anyone asks for more info about building / buying / making or generally learning about the printers in the Village, I'm hoping to have the resources on this page for them to get that info.    If anyone has ideas for other resources that would be useful, please drop me an email and I'll get it listed ASAP.    I know other folks plan on having handout postcards / flyers / business cards -- the more the merrier.

In the next week I'll send out final reminder emails about things to bring, things we might need, etc...   If you're going to print any sample / handout items ahead of time, now would be a good time to start!

Officially Official

Just a note - the list of Makers has been added to the MakerFaire website.  In addition to being all listed individually, we're grouped together here as well:  http://makerfaire.com/pub/e/4491

I hope to have more good news this week.

Acceptance Letters

Just heard that some folks are getting their 'acceptance' emails if they signed up as Makers for MakerFaire.     Keep an eye out!   The MakerFaire team probably got a ton of applications at the last minute, so I wouldn't get too worried if you don't get one today.

August 15 Update

Registration Last Call

Just a reminder for anyone who wants to print and / or attend MakerFaire NYC and hang out at the 3D Printer Village:   The deadline for Maker registration is TODAY, August 15th.  Word from Nick at Make is that he's got 10 sets of papers in already that are part of our booth.

http://makerfaire.com/newyork/2010/callformakers/

If you sign up, make sure that you mention the 3D Printer Village in section three.   Our booth is now up to 3 spaces, so we've got 30'x10'.  I've also requested wired internet access in addition to the Faire WiFi.

Printing

If you have any models that you print and like, maybe you can print a few and bring them to the Faire.   We're going to print some larger models that people might find interesting just to have some demonstrations around the booth.   I'm trying to do a selection of models in various colors, just a range of things I think people might like.

Some of us are going to print some smaller / fast items in volume before the show so that they can be given away.   I also plan on leaving at least one of my printers running these parts during the show as demo pieces.  I just uploaded an example of one of the things we're going to use to thingiverse: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3794

Nobody has to use that (or to print anything in advance if you don't want to!) but it's an idea.   I know at previous MakerFaires that people are really enthused to get anything from the printer.

Supporters

We're now being supported by MakerBot, BotMill.com, UltiMachine, and MakerGear.  I've purchased from almost all of these vendors already, and I'm going to make it a point to keep buying from them.  They'll be bringing various supplies to the Faire to help keep us running all weekend.  We have letters out to a few more vendors, and if I get anything promising back I'll post it.

Details, Details, Details

Just keep in mind the kind of things that we'll need to make this work.  We'll have some basic tools, but anyone who can should try to bring extra power strips.  For the time being people should plan on bringing some filament, but by the time of the show we might have enough donated.    As we get closer to the show we should have more info about things like signage, seating, and things I haven't yet imagined.

Call for Makers: Sign Up Now!

Anyone who wants to either help with the builds over the course of MakerFaire weekend or intends to bring a printer / electronics / something else related to the 3D Printer Village has to go and register as a Maker before August 15th.    This should get you listed in the program, on the website (you get to include your URL / twitter / etc), and will get you into the Faire.

http://makerfaire.com/newyork/2010/callformakers/

Note!   In section 3, please make sure to fill in that you are part of the 3D Printer Village.  I've spoken with the MakerFaire staff and that's what they're expecting so that we can keep things organized.   If you fill out and you're not listed on the post below this, please let me know so I can keep a relatively updated list.

Attendee List: Draft

I've moved this to here:  http://3dprintervillage.posterous.com/pages/attendee-list to keep things neater on the front page.

6 Aug 2010

Equipment / Supply Needs

Ongoing list of items we'll need for this to work.  This is all tentative until we get the details about exactly what's included.   Right now I think we'll get a few power outlets, 2 tables, and 4 chairs.   That's it.

Items I can think of immediately:

  • signage
  • power strips (lots)
  • table coverings
  • extra chairs
  • extension cord(s)
  • ez-up tent (if we're outdoor?)
  • what else?

3dprintervillage's Space

The 3D Printer Village will be an area for 3D printing enthusiasts to gather at MakerFaire NYC and show off what they're working on. We'll have MakerBots, RepRap Mendels, and probably a few home-brew solutions.
